Commercial Treatments

Hair loss affects more men than it does women and this is thought to be because some men have an excess of testosterone, the male hormone. There are all kinds of remedies available for treating hair loss and people who want something with a good track record, but is not necessarily a drug, are increasingly turning to commercial treatments.

A major problem with commercial treatments for hair loss is that they are not regulated. You don’t always know quite what you are taking, whether it will be ok with other medications you may be on, and what if any are the side effects. As so many of these treatments are sold over the internet it is not always easy to tell which will work and which won’t. Many of these are aimed at male pattern baldness but some are aimed at women. Remedies that have their ingredients listed and contain green tea or nettle extract may have some beneficial effect but you should ask your doctor whether the other ingredients might interfere with any other medication you are taking. Most doctors recommend FDA tested treatments as these have federal approval while others have not been through the same rigorous clinical trials and are not on the approved list. The main problem with commercial products is because you don’t know whether any trials have been undertaken, you may not be aware of any potential side effects.

If you do decide to look at buying commercial hair loss products over the internet then you should also be aware that there are scammers out there who will sell you something that they know will not work. Do your research, perhaps you should consult a medical practitioner before buying anything. Certainly there are some useful remedies out there, particularly those containing natural ingredients. Some of these have undergone field trials and this is what you really should be looking for – if they have undergone trials then the chances are that your doctor will have heard of them. Some of these have been known to reduce hair loss and do encourage hair growth.

There are any number of commercial products to choose from. You will find them advertised as shampoos, as hair oil, or hair food. You should bear in mind when using any preparation that discouraging hair loss or encouraging hair growth takes time. Many people give up if they do not get results in a month. Some of these products may have to be taken for three months or more before any beneficial results are noticed.

Before you try any commercial products it might be wise to look at the rest of your lifestyle. Certainly poor nutrition has been shown to have a deleterious effect on all areas of our hair – good nutrition is essential to healthy hair growth, without the right nutrients hair may shed and will not grow as it should. Good nutrition will help to foster any benefits that a commercial product may have.
