FDA Approved Treatments
More men than women try out treatment for hair loss as many of them are prone to baldness. This tendency to baldness is largely due to the fact that men produce more testosterone than women. It is useful if people with hair loss problems have heard of FDA (food and drug administration) approved treatments as these have gone through a series of tests. This is quite important because the FDA is a federal agency and only drugs with government approval can be put on the market.
A lot of people looking for help with hair loss will look for a treatment that has proven effective in the greatest number of cases. Severe hair loss, for example is known to be helped by a drug called Rogaine not only in men, but also in women. It is meant to stimulate re-growth which in turn reverses the baldness pattern. Some people will use Rogaine with along with other FDA approved treatments such as Propecia. FDA approval, means that these drugs have proved safe for users in over sixty trials. These trials are very expensive and is the main reason why some highly effective remedies do not have government approval.
When Rogaine first gained approval it was still available on prescription only but this was later reviewed by the FDA and the drug is now available over the counter. Rogaine hair loss treatment is applied to the scalp twice a day and over time will stimulate hair growth in many people. It is usually advisable to start with a small dose, but some people will require a higher strength, this may not suit some women, however, as there is a risk of developing facial hair.
Propecia can be taken in pill form and works by blocking something called DHT which is a major contributory factor to hair loss – Propecia may not be effective for everyone when used alone because trials reveal that while it works for the top of the head and the middle of the scalp, it does not stimulate growth at the sides and the temples.
Hair loss is an individual matter, but when using FDA approved hair loss treatments it needs to be borne in mind that it may take some months to begin achieving a result. Finally you need to be aware that, as with many drugs, some people may experience side effects and it is wise to see your doctor if you start experiencing unexplained symptoms.
